So far, estimating shipping costs has given me the most trouble in the shop department. Any tricks for keeping shipping cost down and accurate so you don't loose money?

You could try packing up an item and either taking it to the post office to have them weigh it and calculate the shipping, or weighing it yourself on the automated kiosk that some post offices have. I would probably choose the latter, as the surly employees of my local USPS would probably have a stroke if I had them go to all that trouble and then didn't actually mail anything! Could be a pain if you have a lot of items of varying weights, though. My stuff is small and generally all items have similar weight, so I have pretty much figured out what it will cost me, at least for US shipping.
Or, you could get a postal scale to weigh your packaged items and then use the USPS website to calculate the costs.... though I've found their site to be inaccurate on occasion. I'm not certain that I'd trust this method for international.

I did the stamps.com account. It's 15 a month to maintain the account plus whatever postage you need. I got a free postal scale that plugs right into the computer and weighs right into the software that you download. It's helped be a ton so far and i'm really in love with the fact that the only reason I need to go to the post office is to drop off my packages. Beyond that they credited my account $5 automatically, and then I got an additional $20 in free postage for mailing back two postcards with stamps that I printed from the software. If you don't feel like doing something like that buying a cheap postal scale from ebay or craigslist would work and USPS.com has a postage calculator that you can plug in where you're sending to and how much the item weighs and then they give you a breakdown of all of the options you can use to send. Still would have to stand in line at the PO but at least you would know what to charge for shipping.

I bought myself a small scale and weighed some items to figure out average weight of my packages. I then go to the Canada Post website and there is a tool there that allows me to figure out exact cost of shipping.

bluecalla, thanks for that! I joined Venture for the shipping reductions and Canadian upgrades, but it is so confusing to figure out shipping rates...plus they measure everything as well as weigh it-got any suggestions? I'd like to list shipping to other places besides N.
America, but I'm a bit nervous about guesstimating...will try the scale for local stuff, but have no clue how to figure out foreign shipping yet, and i know that people won't bother convo-ing you if you don't have it listed..*sigh*

If you use paypal which I assume you do, you save money by printing your postage right from paypal and there is no charge to do that. Also, you can print your postage for free from the usps website and it is 5-10 % cheaper there. Also order your free priority mail boxes online and then the po will pick up the packages from your home, no charge.

FYI - USPS will pick up parcel post packages as well. As long as they have postage printed out if they are more than 13 oz. You just go to the USPS website and schedule pickup. There is no charge.

that's great to know, I didn't know they picked up parcel post. I am so close to the p.o. that I usually hand carry it but I need to get in the habit of saving myself the leg work.
