There is a fair bit of talk on the Etsy forums about re-listing your shop items to keep them high in their search engines. Do any of you do this? If so, how does it work? Do you de-activate an item and then re-list?
I know I'm not doing nearly enough marketing for my shop yet, but I can't avoid hearing about doing this so obviously it's on my radar as a huge question mark. I really can't afford to relist if I'm not selling well, but if it really is a proven way up increasing views/sales, I need to rethink I guess.

Hi
I do this. But I use the renew feature. So I pick some items here and there throughout the day and renew them. It does charge me 20cents per item each time I renew so I try to keep it to a minimum. I don't have many sales yet (most are from folks who know me personally) so I can't say for sure that it is working for sales but it does increase views.

I also renew my listings, not as often as I probably should but I try. I am getting ready for 2 craft shows in the next 2 weeks so this is the quickest way to be out there. It does increase views.

I renew about once a week but am thinking that I need to just renew one item a day to keep my stuff out there and my shop in the public eye

I have read a lot about this and found that renewing one item a day during a high viewing time (or at least what you find to be a high viewing time for your items) has increased hits...not necessarily sales though.

I renew daily. It can get expensive though so what some sellers do is set aside a daily amount for promoting, whether that be blog ads or renewing or FB ads or whatever. I try to spend about 0.40 to .80 a day and I'll increase the amount as I get more income from sales. I read in the forums that %10 of your shop income should go back into listing and advertising fees.

I relisted an item that sold yesterday, and not even an hour later the item resold. It was crazy!

I do every other week with a few items.

I have been renewing a few items a week. Although it has resulted in a few more views, it has not produced many sales. You really have to watch yourself because you can get carried away. My monthly Etsy bill can get high with all of the relisting and showcases I purchase. I would rather space listing new items out. I try to list one item every other night to stay towards the top of the searches.

I have relisted a few times and it does increase my views, not seeing any sales from it tho. I usually pick 2-3 items and relist them. I won't do it on the week ends tho, too many people who work are increasing their inventory then and you just get bumped to the 4th or 5th page almost as soon as you relist. But Mon to Fri I will relist. I can't afford to do a lot of it but I do see it increase my views. Lana

I only relist an item if it is something I have sold and have more of--I have had some luck selling that way. I am dealing in supplies and vintage at the moment--will be opening my chocolate shop here soon--2 shops and my B&M shop should keep my head spinning. How many views should an item get? anyone have an idea?

Renewing is a solid plan to help advertise. I think some shops solely rely on it and get sales off of that. To do most effectively, figure out what your most popular days on your shop is, (through google analytics) and relist 3-5 items (depends on inventory size) for each day. Also, it will help to experiment and figure out which time of the day it is best to relist. For instance, sometimes evenings are better than mornings.
With renewing I figured out which of my items were the favorites and were things I should continue to stock my shop with!

I have read a bucket of threads about re-listing over the past months and lots of folks swear by it. If your items are $40 that is fine. For me it isn't practical when most of my items are well under $5, it makes no sense to keep relisting just to get views. I think it makes a lot more sense to work extra hard to get more items to list. They both cost the same amount 20 cents and should promote the same number of views. You need at least 30-50 items to look like you are truly in business. As things expire I do relist at that point. I want my full 4 months to sell something. The more listings you have the more views & sales.
To get more feedback we need to buy from each other or trade. I just described in an early post by Hippie, a trade promotion idea for our team I had. It is down near the bottom of the index link I think I don't know how to link to it.

I only renew when an item expire if it still fits in my shop theme (I'm in the evolving process LOL)
Since I list new item every day, the items that don't sell are expiring one every day.
So in the morning I renew an expired listing and in the evening I list a new item. If I have a sale and I'm able to re-make the items I relist, or set up custom orders.

I renew a few every few weeks just so I don't go broke renewing. I've been lucky a few times and purchased a main showcase spot and those do really well if you are looking to get your view count up and I did get a sale today from the showcase!

Since Saturday, I'm trying a new way to renew, following the experiment of "Somethingblue" ! I just started, so I will let you know in a few weeks if it worked for me like it did for her, but so far my views have increased and I had a sale last night !
Go take a look at her blog and you might want to give it a try !
I featured her in my Treasury tonight and you can go take a look and leave a comment if you feel like to !
Happy sales everyone,
Laurence

That was a great article. I do renew fairly often, but never with that efficiency. I'll have to try harder.

"somethingblues" experiment is fabulous. She has taken the time to get some hard results. Kudos to you for doing the work! I am sure you will se it in sales. As a very new shopkeeper, sometimes the phrases folks use are foreign to me - like the "Google analytics"? how does one get to that? I am defintely taking a harder look at photos and listing more items.....where does one find the time! Thanks all of you for following this thread!
