Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

Good morning All you lovely and wonderful Dlisters, I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed lately. I've been reading and researching this whole idea of promoting yourself. Well.......I don't know about anyone else, for me it's so very overwhelming. I'm not that computer savy and the more I read the more lost I feel. I do use facebook, visit the forums, go to chat and use this msg. board. I've learned many tips from this msg. board and love being part of this team. On the rest I feel so overwhelmed and am beginning to feel as though my shop is getting lost in the crowd. Does anyone know of a service that will do these things for you for a fee? I think there is a real need for this service and I also think most people like myself would be willing to pay for it. So theres an idea for anyone who is computer savy or knows someone else who is.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

I am totally in agreement with you. I was also thinking that someone on etsy needs to offer this as a service.

I've decided for myself that I simply can't do it all. I am doing some and slowly it is starting to pick up for me (although offline). I've had 2 people find me that are local and asked me to do craft shows before Christmas by searching local on Etsy. Here's what I do (and this is all I do because I have 2 small kids and 2 part-time jobs):

- I created a facebook fan page and invited all my friends to join
- I also post my new items in a photo album on my personal facebook account and sometimes ask people to kindly leave me feedback. This has generated a lot of sales!
- I have my facebook fan page link directly to my twitter feed and all my posts in one place get done in 2 places
- I searched for twitter accounts of people who are my target audience and started following them - a lot of them are following me in return.

That's it. And I'm starting to get sales this way.

I hope this helps you a bit!
Celine

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

You're doing a lot more than me. I've created a facebook page and have not yet mastered creating a fan page. I do not twitter, nor do I want to. The items that I create are very time intensive. I really just do not have the time to do all that. Hopefully someone will create this service see this post and contact me. In the meantime I've reverted back to the greatest social net work I know, prayer Lord, please bless my shop and help me to be successful.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

Sharon, do you do etsy full time or part?  I work full time, so etsy is only part time for me and it can be very overwhelming.  I wrote a blog post about it.. you should check it out... http://etsydlist.blogspot.com/ .  The key is to go at your own pace.  Think of one thing at a time, learn about it and implement and then go on to the next.  I only do a blog and this board, and very rarely do I twitter, but I have an account.  I'm still doing ok with sales, not great by any means, but seriously... most of my sales are coming from people doing searches on etsy, or from google.  I would recommend that you set up your google analystics (I'm blogging about that this weekend) and see where your traffic is coming from, what key words people are using when they end up on your site.  It's really helpful.  Just remember, one thing at a time.. the world is not ending tomorrow.  You have time.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

I do this fulltime....and it's kicking my butt! I really need to start working on promoting again, i've sort of let that fall into the cracks lately since i've been so busy. I haven't even really had time to make stuff I did make another towel set for my MIL but that's really all i've done. I did re-take some photos with my new background and am fairly happy with the way they turned out, i'm sure that I can probably do better...but for now it's what i've got. Now that I have the new sewing machine i'm overflowing with ideas as to things I can make that would fall in line with my shop items. I'm also feeling super overwhelmed with this whole LLC thing, my dad is coming by this weekend to sit down and talk to me about it in more detail since my visits to the office this week have been pretty brief and it's been more of sign this and this and do this....not really a whole lot of detailed info at this point. Urgh.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

Welcome to my world. All I want to do is make jewelry. I can't believe how much time I spend on everything else. I am all over the place and getting nowhere. I don't twitter or face book.  Thanks to my husband my items are now being downloaded to google. I spent hours trying to do that and got nowhere. I seems like I list something and then run to the forums to beg people to look, never mind buy.   I came across etsyhacks today. Supposedly it helps you do things easier. Who knows what thing but people seem to love it. My husband will look into that next. I'll let you know if it looks promising.
Good luck to all.

The google analystics information would be very useful.  I've heard about it, but not sure about how to use it...  I too do this part-time and really need help just getting the word out about the shop.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

When I opened shop in September - about 3 weeks ago - I went gung ho with the Twitter and FB stuff. I do believe to a certain degree that these things can be useful. But I'm not convinced it's worth the time some people insist you spend on it. I don't believe I'm hitting my target market with it and I'm not sure how to reach them on my super tight budget.

I do have Google Analytics set up - and Google Base, but I'm not paying much attention to them at the moment. I'm hoping next week I can reboot.

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

Thanks for all your replies and suggestions. The more I read the more I realise I'm not the only person who feels as though I'm drowning in this super highway of information. I also realise that someone who is educated on how to do all this and enjoys doing it could probably make a good living from those of us who do not understand or enjoy doing it. I really keep hoping someone will start a service for those of us who do not enjoy the promoting part. The items I make require a lot of time. Like the rest of you, I have so many other things to do when I'm not crocheting. I'm going to take soulstones advice and make a list of things I need to master and do one at at time. Wish me luck! I'm going to need it! lol

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

I work a full time job plus do all of my Etsy promoting. It can be very time consuming. I just try to plan my week by making a schedule and sticking to it. You may want to alot certain times for promoting. Maybe 30 minutes each morning during the week. Then allow an hour each weekend day. If you don't allow yourself a schedule you may put it off or not do it at all. Then you do get lost in the sea of Etsy listings. I think promoting full time for others would be a fun career...Definitley more exciting than my day job;)

Re: Feeling Overwhelmed With Promoting

I started my shop as a way to get a little income for my family, but so far I'm spending more than taking in. But I'm going to do a couple of home shows so people can see the products in person. They can buy as gifts or for themselves. I'll make things for my kids' teachers and include a business card so they are aware that I do this. I think eventually word will get out but I see that more business would probably come from my friends and teachers rather than from online sales from strangers.
