Hi All I figured it might be a nice to have an area where we can ask some technical questions. No need to divulge trade secrets but we are all experts in different things so maybe we can help each other out.
Ok I have a couple of questions.
How many inches around should a child's hat be? I've been asked to make some but I don't have any kids whose heads I can measure. My neighbors might report me to the police if I start chasing their kids around with a tape measure. I'm thinking age range 4-7.
Also, I was considering getting a sewing machine to assist with doing the appliques on my scarves. Will a sewing machine be able to handle sewing through thick felt? Do I need something special?
Happy to answer any knitting/felting questions if they come up.

Thanks!!! I'm going to start doing cat hats for kids.
Ok for anyone who knits. Here is a video on how to knit in the round using 2 circular needles. If you knit socks or hats and have to use double pointed check this out. I swear this technique changed my life. Ok I am a total knitting geek obviously.

Fiberpuppy, have you tried the magic loop? At first, it was a bit awkward, but now I love it. It saves you from having to buy two sets of needles in each size.

Fiberpuppy, my boys would love frog hats!
As for the sewing machine, my mother recently bought one from Sears to use for a variety of things. One is the place mats we are working on. She has been able to sew 2 layers of cotton fabric with binding tape and bamboo batting and has not had to change to a heavy duty foot. She did not spend a ton on her machine certainly less than $200.

twocats- that's awesome. I've been looking around for a good machine under 200. Do you know what brand/model it is?

Thanks for the sewing machine info!!!
Charissa, I haven't tried the magic loop. I'm going to look it up for sure. You wouldn't believe how many circular needles I have from knitting in the round. Of course when I start a new project I can never find the size I need. LOL It's kind of like the same mystery as how the scissors always get lost no matter how many pairs you have. Maybe I should buy one of those pacifier leashes for my scissors.

That is a good idea for the paci leash. I went to Hobby Lobby and got a scrapbook container that had two zipper sections. One had a plastic container. I took that out and bought 10 binder pockets with zippers. Then I labeled each one with a needle size and in go the circs. The other zipper section holds my Knit Picks Options needle set. Helps tremendously!
Knitting Help has a great video on Magic loop at

Wow, that's going on my wish list. I swear etsy is so creative. Every time you think you have an original idea you discover someone on etsy who already makes it.
